Rudolf Nureyev

Rudolf NureyevRudolf Nureyev
died 10 years ago, on 6 January 1992 at the age of 55. To mark the anniversary, the National Film Theatre showed a season of his work on film through January 2003

Allen Robertson
previews the series in The Times.
"Dancers are notoriously wary about the way they look on film, and Rudolf Nureyev was no exception. Yet he repeatedly chose to appear in film and on television. He was such a superstar in the 1960s that he could hardly have avoided the camera. Nureyev even appeared on The Muppet Show partnering Miss Piggy in Swine Lake. He became one of the first dancers whose career can actually be viewed retrospectively."
Times, 6 Jan. 03

John Percival
also looks forward to the season:
"So, what is the NFT season going to reveal? Will a new public, who never saw Nureyev live on stage, be as impressed as those of us who are revisiting our memories? Notoriously, something of the directness gets lost when a stage show is seen on screen. Yet I vividly remember how a group of Royal Ballet men, too young to have seen it live, burst into spontaneous, wildly enthusiastic applause when his solo from Le Corsaire was included in a private film showing."
Independent, 28 Dec. 02

The anniversary is also being marked on stage, in galas in Milan, Vienna and Paris. There will also be a special tribute programme at Covent Garden in April.
